Our opportunity

Azure Data Engineer

Are you a motivated, hands-on, and innovative person interested in working for one of the largest global insurers? Are you passionate about designing scalable data architectures and building robust pipelines that power critical risk decisions? Then this role is definitely something for you. We are looking for a Data Engineer to join the newly formed Risk Accumulation Management Platform (RAMP) team

The position is planned as a 1‑year assignment for now.

Your role
As an Azure Data Engineer, your main responsibilities will involve:

  • Design and implement the target data model for risk accumulation, covering both location-based catastrophe exposure and non-location-based lines, including full exposure history.
  • Architect and develop data ingestion ETL pipelines to migrate data from legacy accumulation data sources into a modern Databricks based platform.
  • Integrate underwriting pipeline data (submissions and quotations) into accumulation reports, ensuring current and in-progress risk views are available to stakeholders.
  • Build and optimize long-running batch jobs for data transformation, aggregation, and snapshot management using Databricks and Delta Lake.
  • Establish data quality frameworks, automated validation checks, and monitoring for all ingested and transformed datasets.
  • Collaborate with and provide backup to the Data Engineer and API Developer on the team, ensuring no key-person dependencies exist across the platform.
  • Work in close collaboration with the wider technology and business teams to deliver an excellent, reliable data platform.

Your Skills and Experience

As an Azure Data Engineer, your skills and experience will ideally include:

  • Strong experience with SQL and relational data modelling, including designing schemas for analytical and reporting workloads.
  • Proficiency in Python (preferably with PySpark, Pandas, and NumPy).
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks (Delta Lake, Lakehouse architecture, workflows/job orchestration) or similar platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience building ETL/ELT pipelines at scale, including data ingestion, transformation, and quality assurance.
  • Familiarity with software development best practices (Git, CI/CD, DevOps).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a structured approach to data architecture.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure data services (Azure Data Factory, Azure Storage, Azure SQL).
  • Knowledge of insurance data structures, particularly catastrophe exposure, accumulation reporting, or reinsurance.
  • Experience with Databricks Feature Serving or Model Serving technologies.
  • Familiarity with data governance and data cataloguing practices.
  • Prior work experience in insurance or financial services.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort presenting technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
